Are you eating worms?

During Wednesday Morning Prayer I had a vivid picture of what I knew was two pieces of manna (although I’ve never actually seen any).   One piece looked appetizing but the other piece was full of worms

Manna was the bread-like food that God the Father provided for the Israelites as they traveled through the desert (see Exodus 16:14-21).  Every morning he provided manna that the people would gather.  He instructed his people to gather enough for each day in the morning. Any bread that was kept over night became full of worms and foul by the next morning.

Ecstasy and Delight

Someone recently pointed out this quote on Terry Virgo’s website that I found very helpful.

‘Ecstasy and delight are essential to the believer’s soul and they promote sanctification. We were not meant to live without spiritual exhilaration and the Christian who goes for a long time without the experience of heart-warming will soon find himself tempted to have his emotions satisfied from earthly things and not, as he ought, from the Spirit of God.

‘The soul is so constituted that it craves fulfillment from things outside itself and will embrace earthly joys for satisfaction when it cannot reach spiritual ones. … [Read the rest of this post]

Knowing God’s Will

I think the current generation is obsessed with finding God’s will, but treat its like it’s some mythological quest…almost like finding the ring in Mordor. So if you’re not careful and don’t follow the exact path, you’ll miss out. Therefore, we spend all this time trying to figure out the big great will of God for our life, but ignore the 100s if not thousands of smaller decisions we make not considering God’s will.

Knowing God’s will isn’t a quest or a discovery, but it’s happens through a renewed mind. Romans 12:2-3 says, “Do not be conformed to this world, but … [Read the rest of this post]

Attention 20 Somethings…

I read the other day that the Millennial Generation (those born between 1980-2000) is the largest generation is US history edging out the Baby Boomers by 2.1 million. Your generation is getting ready to take center stage and will have the attention of both Washington and Wall Street.

Unlike your pessimistic predecessors (Generation X), you are optimistic about the future. You are relational. You are learners. You are hopeful, but you are looking less and less to Jesus. Just 31% of Millennials agree that Jesus is the only way (The Millenials, Rainer, page 22) and even less (13%) consider spirituality … [Read the rest of this post]

How Should Preachers Read the Bible?

With many of us resolved to regularly read our Bibles this year, I thought this piece of advice from the Newfrontiers USA blog The Confluence was interesting and helpful. (Check out this blog when you hav

“My main advice here is: Read your bible systematically. The danger is to read at random, and that means that one tends to be reading only one’s favourite passages. In other words one fails to read the whole bible.

God is Our Provider

One of the great themes of the Bible is the promise that God WILL take care of us. Over and over again, we are encouraged to cast our fears and concerns upon Him, and He promises to be that sure foundation and give us exactly what we need exactly when we need it.

Recently I had a conversation with Rekekah Kruvand (a member at Jubilee Church at our St. Louis City location) and she relayed this story to me that I found encouraging and I thought you would to:

This year has been more financially tight for me than I

Christmas: A Time for Worship – Part 3

WORSHIP CLARIFIES OUR PERSPECTIVE

Then God’s presence appears in the midst of daily life, people’s lives and worldviews are transformed. Worship surrounds God’s appearance. Worship flourished before, during and after the birth of Jesus. Mary, shepherds, angels and wise men were all filled with awe and wonder. A new perspective came into their lives. Mary’s song of worship to God is a rich revelation is who God is and His marvelous works.

“And his mercy is on those who fear him from generation to generation. He has shown strength with his … [Read the rest of this post]

DID YOU KNOW GOD SINGS YOUR NAME?

“The LORD, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17)

God sings my name. Yet we who follow Christ can block out God’s song over us because we know we don’t deserve it. We know our weaknesses and sin. We get lost in life’s distractions and keep our distance from God because we believe He is not … [Read the rest of this post]

Holiday Shopping

Since the holiday shopping season is quickly approaching, I want to let you all know that we have an amazon.com store associated with Jubilee. We originally set this up so we could provide recommended books on our website, but you can use our store to shop the rest of amazon.com as well. There are several great things about this. First, most items through Amazon have a lower price than in stores, in addition to being tax-free, so that could save you a good chunk of change. Second, when someone adds an item to their cart within 24 hours after … [Read the rest of this post]

Listening Together–Acts 13

Listening is rarely regarded as anything but an individual exercise. When it comes to the local church however, it is anything but individual. In Acts chapter 13, the local church in Antioch gathered together corporately to worship, pray and seek God’s face for direction. It is no understatement to say that what took place in that meeting changed, not only the church in Antioch, but also the world, as it served as the impetus for the spread of the gospel around the world.

It is this context that shapes our motivation as a local church (albeit in three locations), for
