Check Out What God Is Doing @jubileestl

Enclosed in this blog post is Jubilee’s 2010-11 Annual Report. Yes, it has the financials, but more importantly, it offers examples of some of the exciting things that God is doing through Jubilee Church. The Bible encourages us to give testimony. Psalm 145 tells us to “commend His works” to others. Psalm 66:5 says, “Come see what God has done…”

If you call Jubilee home, I want to encourage you to “come see what God has done” so that you may be encouraged and full of faith.

What Does It Mean to Be Called?

Your new life as a Christian begins with a call. Matthew 9 recorded a time in the life of Jesus when he saw a man named Matthew sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow Me,” he told him, and Matthew got up and followed Him. This is what it means to be called.

If you are a Christian, you have been called. It may or may not have been this instantaneous or dramatic, but true nonetheless. Some hear the gospel and immediately respond like Matthew, but for others, it happens over time. In John 9, Jesus healed a man born … [Read the rest of this post]

The Need to be Reminded of Truth

The other day I was reading Psalm 3 and was greatly encouraged by how King David responded to life during one of the most difficult times he experienced.  This psalm was penned shortly after David’s kingdom had been wrestled away by his own son, Absalom.  Talk about a national embarrassment!  Everywhere he would turn, people would know that his own son had turned against him and won.  You would think David would be totally undone and humiliated, but he wasn’t.  And the reason he wasn’t was because throughout his life David would not listen to life, but instead turn his … [Read the rest of this post]

No Coasting Here

This past Saturday evening I had the privilege of baptizing Rose Hassler.  Rose is a fixture at our Washington Location and is a delight to everyone she meets.  Rose is in her 70’s, (You think I’m going to give you her exact age?  I don’t think so!), which made the whole experience quite provoking for me personally.

One of the things we all have to fight in life’s journey is the temptation to coast.  Let’s face it, it’s just easier to not put in the time when it comes to reading the Bible and prayer.  It’s easier to not stand … [Read the rest of this post]

The Anchor: A Thought from Psalm 30

What anchors our life? There are many ways to answer that question. One answer is we can rely on circumstances… When things are peaceful and all is well, we can feel secure. David in the Bible did this. In Psalm 30:6-7 David said, “As for me, I said in my prosperity, ‘I shall never be moved.’ By your favor, O LORD, you made my mountain stand strong”. It is certainly not bad to have peace and a sense of well-being. David even notes that God’s favor was the source of his good situation. The risk is when we make our … [Read the rest of this post]

Life’s Central Player

Safety, comfort and convenience have become the standards by which we, as Americans judge life.  Unfortunately, nowhere is this more prevalent than in the western Church.  When we are safe, comfortable and conveniences are readily available, we mistakenly equate this as evidence of God’s presence.  In the same way, when life becomes dangerous, difficult and convenience is nowhere to be found, we mistakenly believe that God is mysteriously absent.  It’s all so logical, yet so wrong.

In Genesis 39 our formulaic standard of measure is challenged through the experiences of Joseph.  Here’s a man who did the right thing by … [Read the rest of this post]

Responding to God

A question that I get a lot, especially after a hard-hitting sermon is “I feel like God wants me to go in this direction, but I just don’t see how I can. What do I do?” So maybe the direction is that they feel to give more, but it’s just not in the budget, or it could be that God is calling them to move deeper into community or serving others when time is really tight. If you can relate, here are a few thoughts and steps for you to take:

1. Recognize your need to repent. The main … [Read the rest of this post]

Year End Review

I am writing this as the snow is falling with our Christmas Eve service just hours away (our last service of the year). I am so proud of all the volunteers who have put so much into this service as all our volunteers do in all of our services at all of our campuses. It is a privilege to lead a community of people who are so passionate about the mission of Jesus.

What a Year
It was another exciting year at Jubilee (our 14th). The most significant piece of news was the addition of the Washington location last May. … [Read the rest of this post]

Stay Dressed for Action

When I was in a freshman in High School, I started for the JV basketball team and sat the bench for Varsity team. And when I say I sat the bench, I literally was on the bench every game for every second and NEVER got a chance to play. To make matters worse, at least two or three times a game my coach would stroll up and down the bench and yell to us freshman, “stay ready, stay ready.” I appreciated his enthusiasm, but I had no idea what he was talking about. When were we going to get a … [Read the rest of this post]

Deconstruct to Reconstruct

When my wife and I were looking to buy a house in South City St. Louis three years ago, there were lots of people trying to rehab houses. Some of these rehabs consisted simply of updated kitchens or baths, new carpets, painting and new window treatments. However, some these rehabs required the whole house to be torn down, including the foundation, and then a whole new house was built (much like Extreme Home Makeover).

This is a helpful analogy in thinking about Christianity and faith. Most religious systems teach you how to have a better life. They tell you that … [Read the rest of this post]
